El Boricua Cultural Corner

The members of the House of Puerto Rico San Diego receive issues of El Boricua, our newletter, on a monthly to bimonthly basis. These issues keep us informed of the status of our organization, schedule of upcoming events, information concerning our members, interesting PR-related articles from our own Daniel Lopez as well as information concerning our towns and recipes.

In this section we want to provide you with access to past articles and information that we think you will find interesting:

This is just a beginning. Expect to see more here in the future.

Sharing the Puerto Rican Experience:

In our monthly meetings, a member of HPRSD or a visiting guest will be invited to share their experiences with the Puerto Rican culture and history. Tom Perry, one of the original founders of La Casa de Puerto Rico, initiated the series by sharing his views on the history of Puerto Rico and the impact it has had on his life. Jaime Chavez shared with us the experience of his first trip to Puerto Rico. To volunteer for upcoming meetings, either call us at (619) 685-2847 or via email at hprsd@houseofpuertorico.com

Remember to join us every year in our Annual HPRSD Lawn Program at Balboa Park.

2001 Success: The Best Time to be in San Diego...

The House of Puerto Rico-San Diego sponsored a large number of annual events in May-June.

Our Goal: Let's celebrate our Puerto Rican culture!

These were many occasions to share with family and friends. We will do it again next year and future activities are planned for 2002. Stay tune to this webpage and your El Boricua Newsletter.

Also, the May-June activities included fundraising efforts for La Casita to be built in Balboa Park. Check out the report further below. The results were fantastic!! We can't start construction quite yet but we're getting close. We need to raise approx. another $18,000 to break ground.

Make sure you visit our website continually for the latest details. For more information or to volunteer, either call us at (619) 685-2847 or via email at hprsd@houseofpuertorico.com

Last but not least, we would be remiss if we did not mention our dream:

The Construction of La Casita Cottage in Balboa Park.

We have been invited by the City of San Diego to pursue the construction of a cottage for the House of Puerto Rico San Diego in the world-famous Balboa Park. Here we can meet and share with the community of San Diego--as well as visitors to the park--the depth and breath of our wonderful culture. We have been working hard organizing a number of fundraising events and inviting anyone who visits our webpage to join us in our goal.

Once we have met this goal, our dreams will not end. This is just the beginning! We aim to be the pride of Puerto Rico by expanding our activities, programs and services to:

  • Provide members and visitors a forum by which to share this cultural experience
  • Educate our children of their Puerto Rican cultural heritage
  • Establish a mentorship program to prepare our children for the future
  • Sponsor a scholarship program for students entering college
  • Increase the visibility of the Puerto Rican people within San Diego's multi-cultural society
  • Establish an emergency relief fund to aid 501 (c) 3 organizations (e.g. the American Red Cross).

We have many dreams for now as well as the future. They are realistic and they can be accomplished. The commitment is there.

If you would like to know how you can get involved, do not hesitate to contact us.
