The House of Puerto Rico San Diego is seeking funds to cover the construction of a one thousand square foot (1,000 sq. ft.) custom-built cottage in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. The cottage will be an addition to the already existing nineteen cottages that represent the House of Pacific Relations International Cottages, Inc.
The House of Pacific Relations International Cottages Inc., founded in 1935, is a non-profit community organization dedicated to furthering cooperation and understanding between national groups in the United States. At present, it consists of twenty-nine (29) national groups. Currently, nineteen of these groups have their own cottage. These cottages, furnished and manned by members of these groups, present exhibits about their culture, history, and traditions to the thousands of visitors that come to Balboa Park each year. The cottages are open to the public free of charge. Thousands of school children visit these cottages every year for educational purposes. All work is done by unpaid volunteers.
The House of Puerto Rico San Diego is one of the national groups that is seeking to build its own cottage. Adding a cottage for the House of Puerto Rico San Diego will give the San Diego community the opportunity to be exposed to the Puerto Rican culture, history, traditions and contributions made by Puerto Ricans to the United States of America.
Once the cottage is built it will be maintained by funds raised through membership dues and fund-raising activities.
