There is a lack of knowledge in the San Diego community about the Puerto Rican history, culture and the Puerto Rican contributions to the United States of America. For example, our U.S. Postal workers have been known to ask for foreign declarations on parcels being mailed to Puerto Rico. Furthermore, bank employees have asked for the foreign exchange rate of the Puerto Rican currency. In response to the need to educate the community about this territory of the United States, the House of Puerto Rico San Diego has decided to build a permanent exhibit cottage to educate the community.
The City of San Diego has also recognized the need to educate its citizens and has agreed to become a partner in this project by providing the land necessary to build the cottage. They will also provide the external maintenance of the cottage.
According to the 1990 U.S. Census there are 131,998 Puerto Ricans in the state of California. There are 12,163 in San Diego County and 5,337 in the City of San Diego. Puerto Rican natives and their descendants have made many contributions to the community in the areas of sports, performing arts, fine arts, education, medicine and the United States armed forces. These contributions will become a permanent exhibit in the cottage.
