The Puerto Rican community of San Diego has been organized since 1972 as a non-profit organization known as La Casa de Puerto Rico. In order to undertake the City of San Diego Balboa Park's cottage project a new corporation was formed under the Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c) 3 in October of 1998. The new organization was incorporated under the name of House of Puerto Rico San Diego.
The purposes for which this corporation was formed are as follows:
1. To promote educational, cultural and charitable purposes within the meaning of the Internal Revenue Code Section 501 (c)3, or the corresponding sections of any future federal tax code.
2. To construct and dedicate to the City of San Diego a public building in Balboa Park, a public park in the City of San Diego, for the purpose of promoting public education regarding the history, art and culture of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and of Puerto Ricans residing in the mainland United States;
3. To provide ongoing maintenance and upkeep of the public building described in paragraph 2, hereinabove.
4. To promote higher education by providing scholarships to members of the San Diego community. Two or more scholarships will be awarded subject to funds available and applications received.
5. To establish a disaster fund to aid 501 (c) 3 organizations (e.g. the American Red Cross).
6. To contribute to local charitable organizations (e.g. St. Vincent's De Paul) and organizations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
The organization is composed of a governing board of directors, which is elected annually by the membership. The governing board consists of seven members: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, Parliamentarian, and two Trustees.
Our activities include, but are not limited to, monthly staff and membership business meetings, cultural activities such as Lawn Programs at Balboa Park, El Dia de San Juan, International Friendship Festivals, local parades, Christmas on the Prado, Christmas Gala Dinner Dance, and others.
